North Gate / Back Gate...where to go and not go.

I am trying to slowly learn about the area from this website and those who have 'been there, done that.' A rewarding experience was the recent event in the new chat room with members such as Aaron, Joerg and Norio. While trying to find a good starting point as a first-time visitor to the actual area, i thought about making a day trip from the Ale'Inn to the North Gate (or Rachel Back Gate.) It seems from the pics and captions that you can go right up to the gate, take photos and do whatever without worry about arrest or detainment by security forces. What are the limits and restrictions at that location?
Is it 'safe' public land outside the fenced border? Has anyone reported contact or exchanging words with the humanoid guards? Are they like the Cammo-Dudes, private security or Air Force Security Police? Since most military guard shacks and check-points are located well INSIDE base property and you are already subject to federal search and inspection before approaching the guard, by the time you read the warning signs it's too late. The first important step to learning the area seems to be to know where NOT to tread at all.
