ABOUT "BOGUS" postal codes for secure facilities:

1. AFEREG is NOT an approved USAF abbreviation. DET is, meaning Detachment, a small unit below Flight (Company to grunts like me) manning levels.

2. A similar catch-all postal address was used at Sierra Army Depot / "SIAD" in the early 1980's. "Herlong CA" was a 1 room post office on the road to the entrance to SIAD, not any kind of actual community.

During my orientation I was briefed on it being "a manufactured address for security reasons". I'm sure that this rather common sense security procedure is common practice, like "Detachment 1 AFEREG".
