The silver balls are radar calibration targets. Hollow aluminum spheres, perfectly round in shape to provide a defined radar return. They are dropped from aircraft for radar calibration. Once dropped, they are usually dented and no longer usable. The lucky ones get to spend their retirement helping to secure the perimeter of Area 51 as visual reference, particularly for the security helicopter. They are much easier to spot from the air than the orange posts. Most corners and other significant points are marked with one of these silver balls (see attached link). They are hollow, nothing spooky inside.
