Long time (5+ years) lurker, first time poster.

Just some FYI on the cell modem setup. It is an interesting system in that there are two separate RF links. Once is a cellular link, the other is a different radio link (900mhz or 2.4 ghz spread spectrum radio form Campbell) that is getting fed into the datalogger via serial interface. That is also why there are two antennas on the unit. So, my guess is that each red box is going to get (or already has??) a RF transmitter and this unit collects data from each of those, logs it and then sends it out (or waits for a call) via cell network. Much cheaper than putting a cell link on each red box. It also explains the lack of hardwired inputs into the datalogger.

Since we have the phone # of the unit, maybe we can find out who it's registered to (reverse lookup)?

I'm going to guess that the containment ponds were for drill fluid. They may also have used it to collect water for drilling rather than having to truck it in.

If they were checking out soil/water contamination, a core sample (or fluid sample) would have sufficed. Obviously that isn't the case; the monitoring is indicative of looking for a trend and/or reaction. The cell link is indicative of either lots of data points being collected or the need for quick feedback.

Very interesting :-)
