Not sure how you could possibly pass on Roberts offer - maybe discuss a little further with the wife? As J356 mentioned getting to the "gate" is not that challenging - the dirt road is used by those folks that come & go to the base that does not exist. Your vehicle will be covered by dust - no doubt about it!
All else along the way is paved & in great condition - a pretty smooth run. My 2 cents on renting a car - go to dollars site about 2 weeks out & use their "lock low & go" deal - intermediate or larger vehicle at their best rate. Last time there & over a weekend, they hooked me up with a mini van & bottom line was less then 20 a day. I find it best with those rates to just rent a vehicle the whole time there - it does save $ and getting in & out of the casinos is fairly easy. Have a blast!!
