Check out the Rachel, NV Home Page (see attached link) for good camp sites and nearby places of interest. The Powerlines Overlook is a great place to camp, with a good view of the Area 51 air space. It absolutely requires a 4WD vehicle, though.
One thing to consider is this: If you camp close to the gates, view of the air space over the base is blocked by the Jumbled Hills. If you don't have a 4WD, I suggest the "Hidden Campsite", the Gravel Area or Campfire Hill. The traditional view spot, the Black Mailbox, really is not a good viewing area. It is at slightly lower elevation, and view of the Groom air space is blocked by White Sides. Directions to all these sites are on the Rachel page. Enjoy your trip.
