I believe Jackethorn might not be too off on V.L. Custer. I think Custer sounds legitimate. I was reading an article on this site about security and in the 70's it was certainly a lot different than today. It wasn't until March 1984 that the entire Groom Dry Lake bed was off limits to civilians. Hikers and miners could go as far as the North East edge of the lake until 1984. So "Lumpy", Jackethorn might not be that far off.
