Perhaps his departure came at a time when the base was switching to a new security pass system with new badges with a totally different look. Perhaps they removed a vital portion of his. It may be a stretch but, if it was clearly made invalid and he was friends with one of the security employees I could see this during the 70's. Today not really. But during the 70's there were a lot of draftees and I could see things being a bit more relaxed in this way. I admit it is a long shot, but still a remote possibility.
