By replacing the windows with a sheet of aluminium, it prevents people from being able to guess the thickness of the real windows, thickness of the canopy frame, etc... Just like the thickness of the glass on the Presidential limos is kept secret... So you can't easily figure out what type of projectiles to use. (Not that I advocate using the presidential limo for target practice, of course)
