The DES encryption has been broken. The EFF ( http://www.eff.org/ ), run by Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow and John Gilmore from Sun Microsystems, sponsored a contest a few years ago to break the encryption. A quick check of the website shows mostly DVD encryption hacking, but I'm sure the DES encryption hacking story is on the net somewhere. The algorithm is in the public domain, but the keys are unfortunately kept secret.

The crypto modules show up at flea markets from time to time, running around $200. They fit Motorola Sabers. Even if you get a module, you need to have the DES key.
