They originally built runways wide and really long back in the day for pilots to ditch on. Remember they were flying aircraft that had never flown before. So they make runways really long for long slow takeoff rolls. They don't want to gun the engines too fast. In addition, if you are flying at night, in a airframe that isnt particularly easy to handle, you would want a big wide target was well.
