I would not go for anything heavier (or bigger) than the C-5 for the Tikaboo hike.

I use a tripod, but I know others use sandbags. The advantage of having a tripod is that it makes smooth panning a lot easier. you end op with a series of photos that are lined up vertically and in lens rotation angle, so they are easier to stitch together for a panorama.

An important feature of the camera is "mirror lockup". Not all cameras have this. On my old D-60 it is a setting in the menu. When activated, the first shutter release locks up the mirror, and the second release opens the curtain and takes the photo. The mirror is heavy enough to cause vibrations, which, at that magnification, are very visible in the photo. By locking it up, waiting a second and then taking the photo you avoid this. Another "must have" feature is a remote shutter release.
