the breitling watches with the ELT need to be activated by the pilot, if I interpretted their print advertisements correctly
a water impact may turn on an ELT - impact/sudden G's is supposed to turn it on. I don't know if they all float or are waterproofed.

Supposedly he was going to go out flying looking for dry lakebeds to do a world land speed record? Why do new ones need to be found - what's wrong with the one in Utah that has been used for years? Story sounds pretty suspect to me. I don't think he will be found in Nevada (or maybe even California)
