I did not notice the road being in particularly rough shape up to the spring when I was there in June. Past the spring, and particularly past the left turn where you start going uphill, it gets pretty bad.
Not sure that I would try to make it to the spring in a street car, though. There are a few sandy spots, and it gets a little bumpy on the last mile or so.
