I think you are right about the cammo dudes getting bored. Just watching tourist taking pictures of the border signs and of them sitting on a nearby hill gets old pretty quick. And when nobody is there, all they do is give workers clearance into the base.

I remember reading about Glenn Campbell having conversations with the cammo dudes. Sometimes they would even offer him help if they thought he was having car trouble! Besides him, I don't know of any other civilians talking with the dudes.
