August is the worst time of year for dry lightning. I think photographing from the hill near Coyote Summit is safe since you can get down from it quickly, but anyone thinking of doing a Tikaboo sidetrip may want to think twice.

There is always the potential that a lightning hit will start a fire, though that is true even as late as October. I was in the area once when Red Flag was cancelled due to poor visibility from smoke.

I've seen some crazy lightning storms in August. I've seen lightning hit the ground twice, which is really impressive. The point where it hits glows yellow, perhaps from sodium in the ground being ionized.
