Autonomous UCAV (A-UCAV)is the latest "trend". The perfect scenario for what you are proposing. Imagine numerous A-UCAV "floating" around the preverbial battle field and battle sky hunting for targets. Interrupted by a ground pilot, anyone of them could be averted on another unplanned, adhoc, mission (mission planners cannot upload the new mission information quickly enough to the available A-UCAV). So, the ground pilot takes control and executes the new adhoc mission. Afterwards, relenquishing control back to the artifically intelligent (AI) controlled vehicle.

Just a theoretical scenario.
