Air force's C-17: FIRST OVERSEAS ACTIVITY
25-01-2007
The Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) new C-17 Globemaster III transport
will fly to the United States next week, on its first overseas activity
since its delivery to Australia last month.

The C-17, operated by Number 36 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley, will carry
equipment and parts for six F-111 strike jets being deployed to Exercise Red
Flag in the Nevada Desert.

Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd said the flight will be used
to further train aircrews and maintenance personnel on C-17 operations.

"The C-17's long haul flight in support of Exercise Red Flag will be an
early demonstration of the giant aircraft's important role in Defence's
developing responsive global airlift capability." Air Marshal Shepherd said.

The C-17 is capable of carrying almost four times the load, over twice the
distance, of the C-130 Hercules.

"The air crews and support crews at 36 Squadron are working hard to complete
the C-17's transition process to regular operational service. I expect the
phase-in process will finish mid-2007."

The C-17 will not take part in Exercise Red Flag, instead returning to
Australia to conduct more training flights.

It will return to the United States in late February to support the F-111s
on their flight back to Australia at the conclusion of Exercise Red Flag.

This C-17 is the first of four being delivered to the RAAF. The second
aircraft is due for arrival in mid-2007.
