I imagine efforts to DF PYD have been difficult because of the terrain. It is possible, if not likely, that a bearing taken from the Rachel area may point north of the base and the NDB could be further to the west, on the road to the NTS. Weather data have been reported for years by oceanic weather buoys, and automated systems are in common use at airports, including Watertown. The sensor for ceiling and visibility is likely electro-optical and/or laser.
