Joerg is right about campfire hill. An excellent view spot for cammos, the border and sky watching. The majority of land in the area is BLM so you can camp basically anywhere. Please be aware of the weather conditions as they can change pretty quickly. Right now the snow level is at 4000ft and Rachel is roughly 5000ft. Last year I was on my way up the 2nd week in January and stopped in Alamo for gas. At 9:00 in the morning it was 6 below 0. Someone at the Inn said it had been - 14 that night, so be prepared.
