These are ship or nose numbers. Our aircraft at United are coded for type and configuration. This means, for example, first digit is the type 5xxx is a B-757, second digit is the configuration; ETOPS, seating and galley type, third and fourth digits are the last two numbers of the N or tail number.
Airlines have these numbers for a reason. No matter what they stand for, we use them to make sure we load, fuel, fix, deice and board the right plane going to a certain destination. I am sure Janet uses the numbers for the same reason.
