Majestic 12 was proven to be a hoax. If I recall, certain famous UFO investigators were anonymously tipped-off that if they looked in a specific area of the National Archives, they would find critical documents proving the existence of extraterrestrial visitation. Sure enough, they found them, and on superficial examination, they appeared to be authentic. Many gullible "believers" immediately took the bait, hook, line and sinker, proclaiming the Majestic 12 documents were irrefutable proof of UFOs. Detailed examinations of the documents later revealed that they were extraordinarily clever fakes, with superb attention to detail - even down to the 40s-50s style paper and typewriter used to create the documents! What busted the hoax was the incorrect date format used. A lot of serious UFO investigators got a black eye on that one!
The real intrigue of the Majestic 12 hoax is why someone would go to such length to perpetrate a spoof of that caliber, yet not come out and take credit for it? I personally believe the hoax was designed to draw the more respectable and rational UFO investigators out into the open for a clean head shot. Mission: Accomplished!
