Comic relief? Actually it’s a good tactic, it’s hard to shoot straight when you’re laughing hard. On the serious side they kept a couple of the F-4’s around for a while too. They used them for giving sightseeing trips for VIP’s and cross country trips. They were also used to tow darts (targets used for aerial gunnery practice). They weren’t good for much else though they didn’t have radar, guns, or most other combat avionics left in them.
