I used to go inside fuel tanks of DC-9's when I got my first airline job and had a lot of fun. Prior to that I did a lot of caving in college so I would see how far out the wing I could get. (I never claimed to be too bright!) After a while I started getting screaming headaches so when I switched to another airline I quit going in tanks. For what it's worth the tanks on 747's and DC-10's are huge.
