So the jury is in and the final designation for the F-35 JSF is the F-35 Lightning II. Not a bad choice by any measure, but probably not my first pick. Reports say the final six choices were: Lightning II, Spitfire II, Cyclone, Reaper, Black Mamba, and Piasa. I personally like "Speartip" but that's just me.
