If you are just flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules) around the country side you would set the Transponder to squawk 1200. You would leave it until you pass thru a controlled airspace and Air Traffic Control (ATC) issues you a new code (2468 for example).

If you Squawk 7500 it means you are being Hijacked.
7600 means radio failure
7700 means emergency (MAYDAY)
0000 is reserved for the Military

At least that's what it was many years ago when I had my Private Pilot License...
