If you are just flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules) around the country side you would set the Transponder to squawk 1200. You would leave it until you pass thru a controlled airspace and Air Traffic Control (ATC) issues you a new code (2468 for example). If you Squawk 7500 it means you are being Hijacked. At least that's what it was many years ago when I had my Private Pilot License...
7600 means radio failure
7700 means emergency (MAYDAY)
0000 is reserved for the Military
