Many years ago the laws were not as strict about picking up the pieces. They took away the big pieces but many small parts remained. At some of the very remote places they left almost the entire airplane because it was too difficult to remove them. In recent years they clean the sites very well.

Finding the pieces is not easy. Often you can walk near them and not know they are there. Here is a picture of a typical crash site (SR-71 site near El Paso, Texas).
