Back in the sixties the South Florida area had no less than thirteen Nike Hercules/Ajax and HAWK SAM sites buried in the surrounding swamps. With Cuba as a proven threat for IRBM's (we know we never got them ALL out), most of the missles could double as a crude ABM (the Nike Herc's were nuclear tipped). The battle fighting strategy of the Soviets were essentially like ours. TTR/Nellis and the Ranch would be unprofitable targets in the event of thermonuclear war. At least in the short run. The centers of Communication, Strategic threats, and military supply and logistical centers would have been targeted first. Georgia had a great deal of Military importance then (still does). Throwing nukes at a place that MIGHT produce a weapon in five years would be secondary to putting multiple warheads on a B-52 Wing. Besides if the Soviets really wanted to occupy us, and they nuked Las Vegas, where would have they vacationed when they won?
