I can't believe how often this topic comes up in this (and other) discussion forums. Every time, it's as if someone thinks they have discovered something new.

Slater Lake was built as a recreation area during the OXCART program in the 1960s. It was named for Col. Hugh "Slip" Slater, commander of the 1129th Special Activities Squadron "Roadrunners." It included a pond surrounded by trees. The pond was even stocked with fish!

During the 1970s, a number of facilities were built in the vicinity of the pond. They included actual and simulated Soviet radars and threat systems. Most of these structures are still in place.

In the DET 3 SP JOB KNOWLEDGE handbook that Glenn Campbell acquired some years ago, the name of the pond was misspelled as "Slatter Lake."
