DRMS and Its Mission

DRMS is responsible for the disposal of all excess personal property generated by the military services. Everything from buttons to battleships is disposed of through programs which include reutilization, transfer, donation, or sale before ultimate disposal. With headquarters in Battle Creek, Mich., DRMS has more than 3,360 employees worldwide. Our DRMOs are located in 44 states and 21 foreign countries. DRMS International is headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany, and manages operations that stretch across 11 time zones. This includes all DRMOs in Europe and the Pacific region, except DRMOs Guam and Hawaii. To further support the military services, DRMS has established temporary DRMOs in Somalia, Haiti, Saudia Arabia and Bosnia. Because of the success of this mission, DRMS is becoming a Recycling Center of excellence for the federal government.

In fiscal 1997, more than $3.8 billion worth of property was reutilized, transferred or donated. DRMS also supports the State Department's Humanitarian Assistance Program and Foreign Military Sales Program.

Property that is not reutilized, transferred or donated is sold to the public as surplus. DRMS manages the DoD Surplus Property Sales Program. Surplus property is sold to the general public through international, regional and retail sales.

DRMS manages the disposal of hazardous property, including hazardous material and hazardous waste, for DoD activities. Information about our environmental mission is located on our WWW page: www.drms.dla.mil/environmental/mission or call (616) 961-5906 to reach our headquarters environmental process division.

DRMS is a leader in meeting the mandate for a safer, healthier environment. DRMS provides contracting services to DoD activities to dispose of hazardous waste safely and in accordance with all applicable laws. Hazardous property that cannot be reused or sold is disposed of through commercial service contracts that must comply with applicable federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations. The most important of these laws is the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which requires "cradle to grave" management of hazardous property.
