If you have the bucks, you set up sensitive receivers in one area at some distance from your transmitters. There are a few technical reasons for doing this. One, the receiver just plan can't handle the high RF of nearly transmitters. Two, the receiver can handle the RF of the transmitter, but it is "desensed" by the high RF field. These problems are generally associated with wideband receivers where there is no prefiltering. [For HF, these sites can be tens of miles apart.]

OK, end of real life radio, now for speculation. I would also take a guess that if they are doing satcom on some not well known bird, they might not want prying eyes to see how the dish is pointed or the polarization of the antenna.

Note that the oasis in the desert often isn't all that pleasing. If you been to the spring at Crystal Springs, it sure is home to a lot of bugs. It's nice, but I wouldn't hang out there very long.
