It's hard to say what you have there. Note that at various spots off the range there are special study areas where they fence off land with the intent that no animals (at least those that walk the earth) will enter. I don't know if such areas exist on the range. Another possibility is you found a wildlife guzzler. I think this is less likely as the square would be quite small and the inside would be light colored, not the color of the range.
