USA Photomaps, ExpertGPS, and QuakeMap load the terraserver images. The only view is from directly above. The advantage is those images are perspective corrected, something google maps (images) is not.

This new service produces 3d images, caching images on your hard drive, but I'm not sure if it archives them. ExpertGPS caches all the data on your hard drive. Incidentally, if you use ExpertGPS, you should format the hard drive or at least the data partition in NTFS, not FAT32. The number of files can eventually exceed the FAT32 limit for one directory.

I thought the new google program was worth the download. However, I think the two dimensional programs are better planning tools, and the ability to use them off line is a big advantage if you are exploring them in the field, where internet access isn't available.
