Not passing judgement on wether the question is stupid or not but suggesting that it may draw more responses on a site that promotes more what if scenerios. That being said the last crossing that I know of was done prior to 9/11. At that time the crossers were taken into custody before they got to the guard shack on Groom Lake Rd. and turned over to the Lincoln County Sheriff. I believe they were detained for a short time at the Lincoln County Jail. They were charged with trespassing and fined $600.00. Not sure where the $10,000.00 figure came from. In the past their have been other incidents that have involved the confiscation of camera equipment, other personal goods, and longer detentions. Since 9/11 the rules may have changed some. The charges could be ramped up. The burden of proof doesnt seem to have to be as definitive as it has in the past. This may be a result of the Patriot Act. Their are possibilities that charges such as terrorism, spying, etc. could be brought. These charges on a military installation could bring serious consequences. Given all that, just a charge of trespassing into a military installation on your record may preclude you from being considered for employment, credit, insurance etc. Probably not worth it.
