All aircraft (and birds) prefer taking off and landing into the wind.
Runways are numbered by their magnetic heading (IE 220 degrees = runway 22).
Major airports have ATIS or Automated Terminal Information System that can be dialed by phone or recieved on a discrete VHF frequency transmited from each airport. ATIS will be labeled (alpha, bravo ect) and have current weather and airport conditions for that aerodrome.
