If you are shooting full frame, maybe you couldn't tell the difference between the photographs. However, with more pixels, you are probably going to crop the image in a more presentable format before reducing the size of the image. I find 800x600 fine for web photographs.

If I were in the market for a digital camera (which I'm not), I'd buy a memory card or two and try the cameras out at a store. [Obviously, make sure security knows they are your cards.] This way you could screen out those digital cameras that put purple along the edges of bright objects. Anyway, you could shoot at both resolutions and convince yourself one way or the other which is better.
