I hope I haven't left the impression that 500mm will allow you to photograph the operation near Groom Lake from Tikaboo. Rather, I said you need a telescope around 500mm to 700mm and enough magnification to at least reach an equivalent focal length of 2000mm. These item in the link is a teleconverter (or sorts) that will increase the focal length of the camera by a factor of 1.5. So if the camera specifications say the camera has a maximum focal length of 333mm, then 1.5x will get you to 500mm. It appears this particular device does not increase the aperture, so the camera will lose a bit more than one stop of light. 500mm is enough to photograph planes at Coyote Summit. Once in a while, it will be too much. Chuck has a photograph of me getting a Tornado haircut while perched on the rocks near Coyote.
