The official trail is probably the least amount of work. There is something to be said for hiking up to the first false summit a bit to the left of the official trail. There is less loose shale there. Also, you can avoid that part of the trail where you hike the side of the mountain laterally. This is the spot where one slip could send you down the hill. Not fatal, but it might hurt a bit. Instead of the hike along the mountain side, you hike the ridge top.

Once on the top of the first false summit, there is little use in varying from the official trail. You need to follow the existing trail to the camp site, then follow the arrows painted on the rocks up the hill. On this hike from the first false summit to the peak, if you miss the trail, the hike gets really tough.
