A Look at the Navy's F/A-18 Hornet

By The Associated Press,

Background information on the F/A-18 Hornet, the type of Navy jet that accidentally dropped a bomb Monday on a group of military personnel in Kuwait:

-Single or twin-seat fighter-attack aircraft.

-With twin engines, it reaches a speed of Mach 1.8, almost twice the speed of sound.

-First tactical aircraft built for both air-to-ground and air-to-air missions.

-Used for interdiction, air support, as a fighter escort and for air defense. Supplements the Navy's F-14 Tomcat.

-Known for its reliability, safety and ability to switch from strike to fighter mode quickly and easily.

-Entered service in 1983; regular upgrades have included improvement of radar system and increased ability to strike at night.

-Used during the airstrikes campaign in the confrontation with Yugoslavia over Kosovo and in the Persian Gulf War (news - web sites).

-Foreign countries with Hornet fleets include Canada, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Kuwait.
