Distance won't be a problem, but the lighting is really crappy at Nellis. It's late in the year so you have a low sun angle (good) but more or less backlighting (bad). You would actually do better if the weather is overcast.

You really don't have much choice where to set up. They close the base about halfway. If I recall correctly, the limit is the fire station. I think the best you could do is head as far south as possible on the base so that most of the photos will be as much to the north as possible. By south, I mean you enter the base and head into it as far as you can.
