[Why not tow the plane to a paved runway.] Also, dry lakes really aren't all that flat. There have been plenty of published reports regarding dry lake landings, though I don't know how well the planes are after such an event. From the NTS tour, it's pretty obvious the Yucca runway is not paved. Airnav indicates Pahute Mesa is paved. Double checking, airnav indicates Yucca is a dirt runway, but I bet it is bladed dirt. I just checked the Global Security website and it turns out Frenchman flat is in Area 5 which I know you see during the tour. There is no paved runway there. Maybe he got Frenchman confused with Yucca.
