If you are going to do much terraserver viewing, you are better off installing a program to view the area and most important to generate waypoints so you can get back to the same location. Of course with a waypoint, you can go there and take a look for yourself, provided you aren't crossing the border. Also, with a waypoint, you can tell someone where to look exactly, rather than at the bottom of the screen blah blah blah.

Here are 3 choices:
http://jdmcox.com/ usaphotomaps, free
http://www.earthquakemap.com/ $10
http://www.expertgps.com/ $60

To the best of my knowledge, the USGS doesn't alter images. They just plain don't upload stuff that the government doesn't want you to see.

Just as an FYI, if you get one of these programs and start downloading gigabytes of terraserver images, you will eventually reach the fat32 file limit. I run win2kpro, and have the map partition built in NTFS. I've never seen XPPro, but I assume it has NTFS as well.

Using DSL and expertgps, I collected about 4 Gbytes of terraserver info, mostly around the Nellis ranges. The data is handy in that can find dirt roads not on the maps. Quite a few crash sites are visible on the terraserver, though I will say I have only found the crash sites on the terraserver after being their in person to get the waypoints. However, you can use Merlin's rule, "there is always a road", to find roads that are not on the maps, which might lead to something interesting. Usually you find a mine, ruins, etc.
