Delamar Dry Lake

Recently, on another thread, Lone Wolf posted a question about the Delamar Dry Lake Test Annex listed in the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) database.

The lakebed itself is the Delamar Dry Lake Test Annex. The FUDS also lists similar "facilities" at Jakes Lake, Grapevine Lake, etc. These are some of the X-15 contingency landing sites. Each lakebed was marked with at least one runway during the X-15 program.

Between 1962 and 1968, air traffic controllers at Area 51 took a great deal of interest in NASA aircraft operations at Delamar Lake (support flights, landing practice, lakebed inspection). Occasionally, F-101 chase aircraft from Area 51 would fly out to Delamar to check out the NASA activities. There was at least one instance where the F-101 "intercepted" a NASA F-104 that was making X-15 approaches to the Delamar runway.
