short contrails by Nellis jets

I see Air Force jets fly over the northwest area of Vegas and every once in a while one of these jets spits out a short, wide contrail. It's not very long, but it's wide. I see the contrails by the higher elevated planes, but these aren't that high and they're not the same type of contrail. Does anyone know what the Air Force is doing when they spit out this type of a contrail?
