The Magellans work fine even when not clear of the vehicle roofline. I've got a Meridan Gold in a RAM mount that is mounted under my mobile phone mount. That puts it just to the left of my passengers left thigh with the unit facing me. It's under my trucks roofline and directly under my mobile phone and mount. I still get a strong signal from 5 or more satellites at any time.
