Looks like you are talking about Mail Summit Road. I never took it as far as the Worthingtons, but the road was fine for the 15 miles I drove on it. I located the cave at N37.82550 W115.61025, but no roads nearby on my Garmin Mapsource. Your route should certainly conserve on fuel.

The time I was exploring the Worthingtons, I ran into a nasty rain storm. This was one of the few times when having a GPS with maps came in handy. I was able to avoid the storm by picking a new route on the fly. Rain plus dirt means if you don't get out very soon, you will have to sit out the rain storm and wait for the roads to dry up. The roads dry up very quickly in the dessert.

I've been watching the lightning storm on SORD. This season seems to have started earlier.
