Word is they were probably 'acquired' from Egypt in the early 80's in exchange for several very cheap F-16s and other military equipment deals following the signing of the peace accord between Israel, the US and Egypt. Israel may have also passed on examples that may have been captured or force landed in Israeli territory in the 1973 Yom Kippur war. Other possible sources in later years may have been former Soviet republics that became friendly with the west following the collapse of the USSR, although I realise this post dates Col. Bond's experience and subsequent crash.
