The MVT-7100 hardly brings in good HF, but it is passable for shortwave broadcasts. The 1.4Khz frequency error on sideband is really a drawback.[see review link] As far as I know this never got fixed, but perhaps you own an upgraded model. Regarding the antenna, if I am not mobile, I use a step up balun since the MVT7100 lacks a high impedance antenna input.

Another choice if you are going to scan only from your car and use a PC is the Icom PCR100 or PCR1000. You must run them with a PC. For those who scan from their car, this is not a big deal. The 1000 has passband tuning, so it is more like a real HF radio, though I like my tuning knob to be real, not virtual.
