Runway length

The runway length needed to take off and land is determined by the wing. Flaps and leading edge slats increase the size of the wing allowing it to fly slower. This will shorten the required runway. The SR-71 (and suposed Aurora) have such a high speed wing design it needed a runway of 30.000'+/- to reach take off speeds. All modern transport catagory aircraft have a design requirement of being able to lose one engine during take off, or half of thier engines during cruse, and make it back to a safe landing. Some military types have an "excess of power available" but the wing is why it flies.
