Their are cattle in that area as it is grazing land. Hence the need for the barbed wire. Before you get to the guard shack you will be stopped by a gate similar a railroad gate that has come down. Their are also the usual signs guarding the border. I have never heard of anyone having any trouble at the back gate. You cant get to close to the guard house as the gate will stop you and the guard house is well inside the border. If you go to the search link on the left side of the home page and type in back gate you will get another link that says the new area 51 north gate. Click on it and scroll down to the second picture and everything will be clearer than my explanation. Hope this helps. Please post a trip report if you get a chance.
